3 Keys to Happiness Now

Personal Note

3 Keys to Happiness Now
Is Life is moving at the speed of light for you these days?  It certainly is for me.  Right now life is requiring our full concentration (i.e. the ability to FOCUS on the results our business needs and not get lost in time-wasters like FB, Pinterest, etc.).  Try setting a timer (Your smart phone has one or you can find them inexpensively at Radio Shack) for 30 minutes and then get back to work. Life also requires emotional presence (How am I feeling? What do I need?) and in general, really good self-care.

I taught a workshop last week called “3 Keys for Happiness Now” for the volunteer staff at The Parent Resource Center of Modesto, a non-profit dedicated to building healthier families.  What a fun time we had because the volunteers were so engaged and interested in “Happiness Practices.

In spite of the challenges of life - (illness, death, job changes, money problems) we can CHOOSE to be happy. It's one of the most powerful choices we have. I'm not suggesting we discount sadness or anger, but consciously open to them, which allow the energy of the emotionto move through us. It's resistance to emotion that builds into anxiety or depression.

Happiness requires intention and practice to cement the happiness neural pathways in the brain and override any negative neural pathways. If you’d like more on how to create Happiness two excellent books besides Intentional JOY /buy-this/ are Happiness Now by Robert Holden and Happiness for No Reason by Marci Shimoff. If you follow the link to the Buy page there's a FREE Mp3 download of Intentional JOY with a 20 minute overview and Stress Busting Relaxation/Guided Imagery Practices you may enjoy.

PS:  The Holidays are a good time to freshen up our happiness practices!!

Much JOY & Love to all of you - Lynn

  1. Ever Lost or Broken your iPhone?
Since 2007 consumers have spend $5.9 billion to repair, replace or pay insurance deductibles for damaged iPhones says Michelle Singletary in "The Color of Money" (Modesto Bee 9-30-12).  A lot of insurance available is expensive with high deductibles but SquareTrade offers a plan for 99 for 2 years with a $50 deductible.  Check it out!!

  2. 15 Things We Now Know About Money & Happiness
Respect means more than money: University of California confirmed that relationships are far more important to most of us than money. When it comes to crafting sustainable positivity and life satisfaction, the strongest drives come from our peers' respect, love and admiration rather than possessions. When it comes to crafting a sustainable positivity and satisfaction, our strongest materials come in the form of our peers’ respect, love, and admiration, not possessions. The series of studies comprising these conclusions all led back to the exact same phenomenon, speaking of how our connections with others drive us far, far more than mad money ever could. 3. Who is happier – The Self-employed or those who work for others?
No matter how much they make, business owners typically enjoy their lives far more than any other workers; in America, anyways. On the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, their “overall well-being” boasted an impressive 72.5, followed by professionals at 71.5. Self-employed workers may spend more time on their tasks, but dissipate some of the stress with the additional autonomy and flexibility their situations inherently provide. http://www.braintrack.com/blog/2012/09/15-things-we-now-know-about-money-and-happiness/

Fall: Change is in The Air

Personal Note

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself." Leo Tolstoy
Fall is the time of change, not just seasonally, but in our hearts and minds. Change is part of life and easier when we stay present, open to the changes and surrender rather than resist.
When September comes around every year my energy takes a dip as it does for so many of us that have been charging around all year.  It’s a natural dip, but one we don’t always listen to.  When I slow down a bit and rest, I don’t get sick. Cough, Cough. But, thankfully there’s Wellness Formula, an herbal concoction available at most health food stores, that boosts the immune system.  See how it is?  I like to believe there’s a remedy for nearly everything.
I’m reading Jane Fonda’s book Prime Time about the Three Acts of Life – Act I Is from birth to thirty, Act II is thirty to sixty and Act III is sixty on. She encourages a Life Review to feel, heal and put into perspective the ups and downs, the successes and failures of life.  I’m going to delve into this and if you do, let’s talk about the process.
Much JOY & Love to all of you - Lynn

Fall: Change is in The Air

3 Self-Care Strategies to Thrive in Times of Change

“Change is inevitable, growth is optional.”  I first started presenting seminars on CHANGE in 1991, which was another time of economic challenge, though not nearly as intense as this period, now named: “The Great Recession.” I think I’ll reframe that to “The Great Opportunity.”

I don’t know how it is with you and the people in your lives these days, but what I’m noticing is “it’s (by “it” I mean everything) hitting the fan.”  Just a few examples: economic struggle, job loss, break ups, re-negotiating relationships, addiction problems coming to the surface, health problems, aging, babies being born, illness, etc. Whew…let’s all take 10 deep breaths.

If you’re feeling wiped out by the enormity of change that’s occurring personally and culturally, you’re not alone.  The good news is that all of these life events provide us with the opportunity to choose whether we will react out of habitual fear patterns or learn to respond with love, care, compassion and kindness to ourselves and those around us.

Why Can’t I Stop Shopping?

Personal Note

“Summer time and the living is easy.” That song by George Gershwin is a good reminder about the purpose of summer. Water makes me happy and “summer time” is replenishing and renewing for this Pisces gal.

My husband Dave and I are heading to North Carolina to visit my daughter next weekend. She lives on Lake Norman and has a boat so we’ll be out on the water and generally being lazy. I’m ready for a lazy week. Also love some of the local food such as biscuits and gravy and shrimp and grits!!

Maybe it’s the hot weather, but I notice that some of the hyper-drive I’ve lived by the last 20 years has mellowed. Though I still work a lot, I’m relaxing more and focusing on enjoying life – especially the summertime.

I hope all of you are doing the same.

Why Can’t I Stop Shopping?

“Things and conditions can give you pleasure, but they cannot give you joy.”

Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

Do stress and anxiety make us addictive? Stress and anxiety are at the highest levels I’ve seen in 30 years and cause a vulnerability to addictive escapes. The economy is a big driver, but it’s exacerbated by the amount of change and loss occurring – job, home or illness, and the fact that we’re not taught how to take care of ourselves in pro-active and loving ways.

Escapes do sort of work - a glass of wine (or 3 or 4) or a hit of pot, or shopping and certainly food, can distract us from life problems, but don’t solve them. If you find yourself relating, take a breath, and try to be nonjudgmental.

Shopping: MyVesta, a web-based financial health center, found that 49% of survey respondents overspent. Experts say 5% of the U.S. population could be full-fledged compulsive shoppers.  Check out Lynn’s comment in the NY Daily News Column 7-27-12 “I Know My Shopping is Compulsive – Why Can’t I Stop?” (Read More)

Family, Vacations & How Much Money Is Enough

I’m in La Quinta on vacation visiting family. It’s 115 outside. I really love my family. What a contrast between last weekend at Lake Tahoe – 80 degrees and the 115 unbelievable heat of the desert. I can barely breathe. Whew!!

Speaking of vacations and time off. When I give talks about money to women in business I often ask the question how much money is enough for you to live the lifestyle you want to live? For my husband Dave and I, it’s enough to live in a nice tidy home (with a nice small house payment) in a cute little neighborhood close to everything, to work hard and here’s the important thing for us – to be able to afford to take 4-6 weeks off a year. That’s of particular value for us. It’s different for all of us, but what’s of value to you and how much is enough money are really good questions to figure out. (For Lynn's blog click here.) Americans don’t tend to value time off or leisure time as much as Europeans do. And, it’s not to say I don’t work a lot – I work plenty and I have time off. But, I don’t own a flashy car or expensive clothes. All about choice, right?

Back to Lake Tahoe – My friend Marianne, two newer friends Marni and Linda (picture) drove to Tahoe and stayed at a friends cabin. We had a blast. On Saturday we rode in a memorial bike ride for Jerry Shelton, Pam Shelton’s husband, who passed away a year ago riding Donner Pass. A group of about 15 of us rode around Donner Lake – 10 miles – far enough. Pam’s group rode Donner Pass – 35 miles straight up – good for them – not something for me. It was a really fun weekend and I was grateful to participate in the ride supporting Pam who is an amazingly strong, heart oriented woman.

Fifty Shades of Green

What’s a bigger discussion taboo around the dinner table? (Adult dinner table, of course) Money or sex? No doubt about it, money.

If you’re a woman you’ve probably read “Fifty Shades of Grey” and have been talking about it with your friends. But I bet you haven’t talked about Fifty Shades of Green – a more important, serious (but less lustful & fun) topic than the characters of Christian Grey or Anastasia Steele ever could be.

It’s hard to talk about money. It’s stressful and scary. Money in the world of Fifty Shades of Grey is full of fun and fantasy – palatial apartments, new cars given to girlfriends, helicopter rides for first dates. (Hello handsome, sexy Christian Grey). (Read More)

Apps to Change Spending & Eating Habits

Personal Note

“You Can Do Anything You Set Your Mind To”

My husband and I got away for a much needed weekend this last month. We stayed at a remote Bed & Breakfast north of Healds burg, reconnected, lazed around, ate good food, tasted some wine, enjoyed the gorgeous country and replenished. As I like to say when life is good – Thank you, Thank you Thank you!!

This type of get away was something my mother would have loved. She’s been gone for almost 20 years but a saying she had comes into mind often – “You can do anything you set your mind to.” I focus on this phrase when I want to attract a weekend get-away, new clients, improve relationships, or stay focused on what needs to be done.

I also think about the message of “The Secret” which was a huge catalyst for prosperity building a few years back. “The Secret” helped millions realize how powerful the mind is to create what we desire, if we stay focused and positive and clean out the hidden obstacles. Then the economy went south and people lapsed into fear, and many have not recovered their optimism or hope.

Let’s remember how important it is to manage our thoughts – you know – those negative, critical ones that pull us into the dark side. To focus on what we WANT and to be grateful for the blessings of life.
